A Professional Photographer’s Perspective
Recently, a heated debate erupted in a photography group I’m part of. The topic? Clients increasingly opting for AI-generated headshots and the resulting impact on professional photographers’ bookings. Many photographers expressed concerns about the future of their craft, wondering if AI could replace their artistry and expertise. With AI headshots gaining popularity for their convenience and cost-effectiveness, a critical question arises: Can AI-generated headshots truly deliver the same value and impact as those taken by professional photographers?
In this blog post, we’ll dive into the nuances of AI versus professional headshots, exploring the strengths and limitations of each. We aim to uncover whether AI can match the quality, personalization, and authenticity of a professionally taken headshot, and ultimately, what this means for the future of photography.
Why Did I Decide to Try AI Headshots?
Amidst the growing chatter in the photography community about AI potentially replacing professional photographers, I felt a strong urge to investigate for myself. As a dedicated headshot photographer, I’m known for paying close attention to details that might escape the average eye. The increasing interest in AI-generated headshots and the concerns about its impact on our industry prompted me to see firsthand how these AI solutions stack up against traditional photography. I wanted to test whether AI could genuinely rival the quality and authenticity that come from a professional’s touch.
What Was the Process of Getting AI Headshots Like?
The process was surprisingly straightforward. I simply googled “AI headshots” and was instantly bombarded with a plethora of companies offering their solutions. The procedure was fairly uniform across the board – you submit your photos, give the machine time to do its thing (usually about 2 hours), and then receive around 100 or so headshots to review. The companies offer various packages, starting as low as $35 and going up to $150. The primary difference between the packages is the number of downloads you’re allowed to have.

How Did the Quality of AI Headshots Compare to Professional Headshots?
Now, here’s where it gets interesting. The quality of the AI headshots were ok, but mainly disappointing. Some of them made me look heavier or disproportional. It was almost comical. Down below I have posted a few of the screenshots I took from the Ai gallery. I also uploaded a few real photos of myself in front of the camera when I was getting ready for a client. I normally testing my lights and not focusing on my posing. So these are as real as they get. haha!
I did write a blog about “AI vs. Professional Headshots: What’s the Difference?” if you would like to read all about that. It has some great points that I think any entrepreneur or business professional should consider. But, I think you may see the difference immediately down below.

Were There Any Unexpected Results or Surprises with the AI Headshots?
There were quite a few surprises. Honestly, I expected the AI to perform better. Given all the concern and complaints I’ve seen in photography groups, I thought AI technology would be more advanced. If you look at the first image in the gallery, it’s almost comical—hands are weird, arms are small, my body looks far less muscular than it actually is. I wasn’t impressed with any of the AI results. Whether you spend $35 or $300, if you end up with images you don’t like, it’s essentially a wasted investment. This is why my clients appreciate working with me. They know that before they leave my studio, they’ll have seen and approved their photos, ensuring that their investment is worthwhile and not wasted.

Would You Recommend AI Headshots, and in What Scenarios?
I would not recommend AI headshots for business or any professional setting and I’m not just saying that because I’m a photographer. The Ai images look unprofessional and can even be off-putting. Imagine seeing an AI-generated photo on a dating app – it would raise some red flags, right? You’d wonder why this person is trying to deceive you. So, I don’t see why anyone would want to use AI headshots except maybe for fun or personal use –(maybe) I mean, would you print out an AI portrait of yourself to hang on the wall? I doubt it. So, I can’t think of any serious scenario where AI headshots would be appropriate and taken seriously. The Feedback is In: AI vs. Professional Headshots
And to bring this all home, I recently conducted a survey on social media to gauge opinions about AI-generated versus professional headshots. The feedback was overwhelmingly in favor of professional photographers, with many supporters highlighting the value of authenticity and craftsmanship. In a related photography group, while there was broad support for professional work, some members noted that certain individuals prefer the unrealistic, more flattering depictions offered by AI. They argued that while such images might seem appealing, they lack authenticity, which is crucial for genuine representation. I understand this perspective, and while AI headshots may be acceptable for personal use or casual settings, they fall short for professional or public-facing purposes where true authenticity is key.
Conclusion
Ultimately, my experiment with AI headshots confirmed what I suspected: AI cannot replace the artistry and authenticity of professional photography. While AI headshots may offer a fun novelty or a budget-friendly option, they fall short in delivering the quality and genuine impact of a professionally taken image. Investing in a professional headshot is crucial for those who want to make a strong, positive impression in their careers. It ensures that your image conveys the authenticity and professionalism necessary for success. Although AI headshots might serve as a casual or affordable choice, they should not be seen as a substitute for the value and effectiveness of a professionally crafted headshot in professional settings.
