– SLTX Capital Staybridge Suites Groundbreaking

Written and photographed by Anthony Johnson

This project started with a warm introduction from West Austin Chamber of Commerce, who referred me to SLTX Capital for coverage of their upcoming hotel groundbreaking.

A few days later, I received this email from SLTX Capital:

“I was given your contact information from the West Austin Chamber. I am looking for someone to help us at the Staybridge Suites hotel groundbreaking ceremony here in West Austin on 12/4, 11:30–1:30.

Please let me know if you have this time slot available and what the fee structure would look like for this event. It will not be anything overly elaborate. Basically, looking for professional services obviously that we can then use the photos on various media posts, etc.”

As a West Austin Chamber member, this is one of the biggest benefits: being trusted and referred into real projects with growing local businesses. In this case, that introduction led to a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Staybridge Suites Austin Lake Travis hotel, scheduled to open in Q1 2027.

The assignment was straightforward but important: create professional images SLTX Capital could use across their website, social media, internal communications, and ongoing PR coverage of the project. Rather than simple event coverage, it functioned as a corporate PR assignment focused on future visibility and storytelling.

The Brief

From that initial email, we clarified a few key details:

Who needed to be featured
Leaders from SLTX Capital, hospitality and development partners, and representatives from the West Austin Chamber of Commerce.

How the images would be used (this is super important)

  • Website project pages
  • LinkedIn and other social platforms
  • Investor and internal updates
  • Potential editorial mentions about SLTX Capital’s growing Texas portfolio

Must-have moments

  • Speakers during the formal program
  • The official groundbreaking with shovels
  • Group portraits of the core team and partners
  • Wide and close up shots of the leadership team

Once we aligned on how the images would be used, we were ready to plan the flow of the day.

Planning the Coverage

Because the photos needed to work for both corporate communications and PR/editorial-style use, I approached this as more than a simple “photo op.”

My planning focused on three goals:

  1. Tell the story clearly
Anyone seeing a single image—on LinkedIn, in a press piece, or on the website—should immediately understand that this is a groundbreaking for a new hotel project in the Austin Lake Travis area.
  2. Highlight key people and partners
Make sure the right faces, logos, and branded elements appear naturally throughout the gallery.
  3. Create flexible assets
Deliver a mix of wide, medium, and detail shots that can be cropped and reused in different formats over the life of the project.

I was envisioning these images being used everywhere—in magazine articles, social media posts, and future pitch decks. That mindset shaped how I framed each shot as the day progressed.

Groundbreaking Day in Austin Lake Travis

On the day of the ceremony, I arrived early at the site in the Austin Lake Travis area to get a feel for the environment, the light, and the best angles.

Before the ceremony, I focused on:

  • Wide establishing shots of the construction site
  • The “Groundbreaking Ceremony” banner and event signage
  • Shovels, hard hats, and architectural renderings
  • The active construction site—the framing, equipment, and materials—to help visually connect the ceremony to the real work already underway.

These images become useful later as web banners, project headers, and editorial context.

As guests arrived, I documented:

  • Genuine interactions and greetings
  • Conversations between SLTX Capital, partners, and Chamber representatives
  • The buildup of energy as everyone gathered near the ceremony area

During the formal program, the focus shifted to:

  • Clean, flattering images of each speaker at the podium
  • Audience reactions and engagement
  • The signature moment when the leadership team stepped forward, grabbed their shovels, and broke ground together

After the formal portion ended, we wrapped with:

  • Group photos of the core SLTX Capital team
  • Smaller groupings of partners and stakeholders
  • A few final candid frames as guests stayed to talk and celebrate what’s ahead
  • Indoor reception coverage — guests networking, enjoying the food, and continuing conversations

Throughout the day, I wasn’t just thinking as a photographer—I was thinking like a PR and brand partner:

“If someone only sees this one image on a website, in a media kit, or on LinkedIn, does it clearly communicate who was involved and what this moment represents?”

What SLTX Capital Received

After the event, SLTX Capital received:

A curated online gallery
Organized so their team could easily review, share, and download the images they needed.

Web-optimized files
Sized for fast loading on their website, social media, and email communications without sacrificing clarity.

Editorial-friendly images
A selection of clean, versatile frames designed for PR/editorial coverage and non-paid promotional use, just as John mentioned in his original email.

From a single two-hour ceremony, they now have a small but powerful image library they can use to:

  • Announce the project publicly
  • Share updates as construction progresses
  • Highlight their role in the Lake Travis community
  • Support future press, recaps, and partnership communications

These aren’t just photos of people holding shovels.
These images are built to create professional credibility for SLTX Capital—showing progress, building trust, and marking a key milestone in the life of this development. As a photographer, the real value in what I do is shaping public perception with my images.

Client Feedback

The most important measure of success is how the client feels about the final result.

On LinkedIn, SLTX Capital shared:

“Anthony Johnson, thank you for helping us capture this milestone for the Staybridge Suites Austin Lake Travis project. We look forward to collaborating with you in the future!”

And in a follow-up email, my client wrote:

“Everything was really good Anthony. Lots of smiles all the way around!”

That’s always my goal:
Images the client is proud to share—and that make everyone involved feel good about how the story is being told.

Final Thoughts

For Developers, Investors & Hospitality Teams in Austin

If you’re planning a groundbreaking, ribbon cutting, or milestone corporate event in the Austin area, here’s what working together looks like:

  • I come to your event as a visual partner, not just a vendor with a camera.

  • We plan around who needs to be visible and where the images will live—your website, LinkedIn, investor decks, internal communications, and PR.

  • You walk away with a polished, on-brand set of images that reflects the scale and professionalism of your project.

No guessing whether someone’s phone photos will be “good enough.”
Just intentional, corporate PR event photography from start to finish.

If you’d like your next milestone captured in a way that supports your brand, partners, and long-term story, I’d be honored to help.

Let’s talk about your upcoming event.
